@star I mean, agreed that the industrial revolution exploited a lot of people, no question. Would have been good to oppose that, yeah. Would be good to get rid of capitalism, probably yeah.

But that "we'd have all been better off" if the industrial revolution wasn't allowed to happen? That's such a shallow take, come on... I and many others would not be alive today without modern medicine and other technology for example. (Not intending to justify anything, but that we'd have been better off is just not black-and-white absolutely true.)

Eh, Nina gets quite angry when people reply to her with misinterpretations of what she’s saying, which probably makes her less effective as a communicator, but it seems to be a coping mechanism for her, so eh~. Anyway, I’m sorry you were on the receiving end of this.

As for the misinterpretation, note that she never says any of the things y’all seem to be projecting on her – she’s not saying technology is bad, she’s referring to the industrial revolution as a political event, not the common/liberal understanding of it as a mostly technological affair. You can tell (although only barely, and easier if you know her other work, but such are the woes of low context communication like microblogging

) that this is the case, ‘cause she’s talking about Luddites, who were not against technology in general (as is the common misconception, but you probably already know that?), but rather against the way owners were using it as a tool of class warfare. I don’t think technological progress would be impossible if they successfully stopped the deployment of these machines in these ways, but here we are almost getting into the discussion of how right people like Pinker are when claiming that capitalism specifically enabled the technological progress associated with the industrial revolution – and I don’t think anyone here thinks that he is completely on the mark with that.

I think this is one of the ways in which the “AI revolution” is an accurate term – if we think about the political aspects this maps very well to the class warfare of the industrial revolution, and given how much less impressive the results of LLMs are when compared to looms, it’s easier to disentangle the technological aspects from the class warfare. Now that I have written it out, this is much of the point of Nina’s original post… <_<”

@timorl You know, these are all completely reasonable things. It's just, you don't get to that conclusion by responding with "fuck you". Arguably, the original post left a lot of room for interpretation if you do not know who this person is/how she works, and that's completely fine and okay, but we can just. Talk about it. And be like "no, you misunderstood me, it's actually xyz" instead of insulting someone and following up with a hot load of cynical sarcasm

Reading through the comments in the quoted thread, the discourse seems to be actually about generative AI and similar?
Meanwhile I'm having a hard time reading that into what Nina posted, even with this context.

May be that I'm taking things too literally because I'm autistic. But in any case I personally find her reaction not reasonable at all, when she's literally talking about one specific thing, (presumably) meaning something more general or something else specifically, with no indication thereof. Can't blame people for interpreting things literally, and especially can't go off at them like that in response.

“Butlerian Jihad” was probably the clearest hint that “machine” in the first toot referred to contemporary AI, and only the second was putting it in historical context. But it was still just a hint, so I definitely understand your confusion.

The whole thing with microblogging being low context is a Known Problem™ at least since Twitter, and it might be unfixable.
