subpost, suicidality mention, police Calling the cops on a person because they're suicidal or tolerating that an acquaintance calls the cops on them is never okay. What is so hard to understand about ACAB?

subpost, suicidality mention, police @star @Ravenize you can still tell them the information they need before arrival to make arrive the right ones and tell them all the details later. that way you not risk any life but still getting needed help. (especially when you don't say anything that might mean the police should come.)

subpost, suicidality mention, police @ellis Yes. My point was just that, even if it is against my will when calling the number explicitly not for police, but for emergency services, they might still send the police as well, and depending on the situation, that's a risk I'd take. Of course I would take steps to prevent this from happening.

psych wards, abuse mentioned, suicide @star @Ravenize ive been through psych wards through literally my whole childhood. i literally did not live w/ my family and went from ward to ward from when i was 8 - 14. it deeply traumatized and broke me so fucking bad, and i got abused in extremely horrible fucking ways. getting someone forcefully warded will only ever bring them closer to death in the long term, and will also get them to lose any and all trust in u. it super cruel to put someone already suffering through that shit.

it is also cruel and selfish as fuck in my opinion to force someone who has already made their own final decision to stay alive through literal state violence. if u want them to not kill themselves offer them care and support and love, and sometimes u just gotta accept that theres nothing u can do. its rlly sad and it sucks and is horrible, but forcing the cops on someone deeply suffering to get them locked up in a prison for mentally ill ppl for a night will not make anytjing better.

this makes me rlly upset tbh, glad u unfollowed me for boosting this bleh

suicide attempt, police @nyovaya @star @Ravenize when I tried to kill myself by overdosing mom's meds, she called an ambulance. Paramedics arrived, no cops. I refused to go with them. Paramedics called the cops to force me. Cops handcuffed me and I was strapped to a hospital bed, my phone taken away and barely any social interaction despite me crying and yelling for attention. It was horribly traumatic and my worst birthday ever.

subpost, sui, police @star there are other ways to try and save your friends (source: my own experiences). And if you are forcing your friends to keep living after they made an informed choice to die can you rly call yourself their friend? (This is not saying that we should let everyone who's suicidal kill themselves - it's mostly about very hard and hopeless cases)

re: subpost, sui, police @hsza @star @Ravenize the barrier for anyone to come is also incredibly high, they wont just show up if you say someone is planning to kill themself.

you'll have to convince them that they have a plan, the means and are working on the execution of that plan

re: subpost, sui, police @hsza @star @Ravenize so even if you'd want to let them do it, if there is any way to prove that you knew about it, you should call the cops regardless just to make sure that you're not on the legal chopping block for it

re: subpost, sui, police @schrottkatze why risk it and potentially traumatize them even more? the next time they wanna do it they won't tell you. maybe they won't tell anybody. to avoid a very hypothetical fine?

re: subpost, sui, police @tastytea @star @Ravenize @schrottkatze @hsza

"i will call cops/ambulance to protect myself"

first of all,
no cops won't go after you. If its clear it's a suicide (which like most cases are) and there are no mysterious circumstances no extensive investigation will happen (a lawyer told me this btw)
second, its highly unlikely they find out about you knowing of the suicide
third, assisted suicide is a thing — it may not be even necessary to call cops, probably can fight your way out of it (im not a lawyer, talk to a lawyer etc)
fourth, you will only delay the suicide, not prevent it
fifth, cops are easy to evade (at least for the case of suicide). if they don't know where you are at most a missing notice will be made.
6. the chances of hurting* someone are much greater than the chance of the suicide actually succeeding. Hurting in the sense of making them more suicidal
7. why do you care if something is legal or not

"i call ambulance not cops"

1. it is default response to send cops, or cops and ambulance. always the case
2. medical staff is legally forced to institutionalise u if they think one is in danger. there is no difference if a cop or ambulance shows up, the risk are the same. difference being cops will always bring u to a doctor/psych for evaluation, as they cant do that themselves

the only time you should call cops/ambulance if that has been a previous arrangement

u choose. u protect urself from the very little chance that u will get in legal troubble, for the expense of traumatising* ur (very likely not anymore) friend.
There is also a simple way to protect urself: tell ur friend the boundary that u don't want to know about any incoming attempt

many times its better to just do no nothing then the wrong thing

*this may end up in them being more suicidal. this may end up in them actually committing, from a situation where previously there was no risk at all

re: subpost, sui, police @hsza @Ravenize @star @schrottkatze

Alright I didn't really want to get involved in this thread because I don't think there is a right answer, it very much depends on specific circumstances, BUT to make sure nobody gets the wrong impression: As someone who has seen this play out, how high that barrier really is can be very different based on the mood of the dispatcher. When a friend called 112 and just said "[x] has been suicidal for a while and is planning to die today", they basically only got asked for the address and ten minutes later cops were interviewing the neighbours to find out whether anyone's at home

re: subpost, sui, police @k1ba @hsza @Ravenize @star @schrottkatze This happened to me when I was just sleeping (and therefore not responding to any digital communication, which the person interpreted as a suicide attempt). It's was a highly unpleasant experience, even when the reason to call the cops was completely bogus and I was even feeling somewhat fine before they arrived – but I really wasn't feeling well after that happened. neofox_woozy
