what the heck is this sorcery, why won't these huge h264 videos compress any better than that with h265 or av1 without looking terrible

@fugi maybe there's a bias introduced through your extended knowledge of h264 encoding parameters vs. your less-extended knowledge of h265 and av1 encoding parameters :3

@star ehh I think at least for h264 and h265 I know about the same, and I tried quite a few different settings and different encoders even ^^'

@fugi rule of thumb (from reddit) is h265 for 4k hdr, h264 for 1080p

@stellavie @fugi me personally, i'd use VP9 for 1080p and, depending on the playback target, either AV1, HEVC or also VP9 for anything above that :3

@stellavie that's not the point here 😅
and h265 can definitely be much smaller (factor 2-5x) for e.g. entertainment media at 1080p at the same quality (to my eyes).

@stellavie my judgement is of course not absolute, but I have been obsessing over this stuff for a few years 😅

@stellavie @fugi av1 for everything or nuke to the face

also if you need to have differing choices for whatever reason consider that it may make sense to choose the more modern codec for lower-fidelity video, not the other way around, since newer codecs are harder to decode and might become unplayable at resolutions like 4k where h264 will still playback fine

@zaire The web series "7 vs. Wild". I ended up grabbing YouTube's av1 encodes instead

@fugi it could also just be the quality of the drivers and actual hardware encoders used. i know that, for example, the AV1 encoder from amd is quite terrible :3
