Apparently the danish state rail's solution to potential IT problems during the DST changeover is to just... stop all trains for an hour???

I think this is a pretty standard solution, Poland does the same. blobfoxlaugh Quite ridiculous, but DST is ridiculous as a concept so what can you expect. blobfoxmlem

Hm~, I’m not sure software is to blame, rather than just problems with timetables in general. I tried finding something more concrete, like descriptions how trains dealt with this historically, but I only found that this is apparently the most common way to solve the problem all around the world nowadays, and no useful historical documents (search is so broken x<).

And now I discovered the closest rail library to me is a major city over (so not in the closest one), and their online catalogue only returns one maybe relevant result, in French, and it’s not on scihub.

Wait, I’m being silly, this is fedi, surely someone knows, so #AskFedi:

Do trains stop due to DST because of software reasons, timetable reasons, or something even weirder?

@timorl @charli AFAIK, yes. If they only have an arrival time (night trains not letting people on), they could probably arrive early, but that might upset the schedules if other trains?

(Found an article from 2025 confirming this for Finland -

That article only says this happens, not what the reasons are, right? Or is my translation software misleading me?

@timorl couldn't they just do the timetables in UTC or some other fixed reference time, and display the times in the current local time zone where it isn't relevant?

Heheh, I think you rediscovered the Soviet solution to the problem. All trains went by Moscow time in the USSR. blobfoxlaugh
