i cannot for the life of me fathom nor possibly understand why pronouns.page has 1737 partners, including ones for "select" and "personalised advertising", which they feel like sharing data with (except for polycule jokes). That is absolutely ridiculous. I will be looking into self-hosting an instance of this soon.

@star disabling UBO and scrolling to the bottom of en.pronouns.page gets to a record 10MB of data loaded too. funny.

(though most of that is stuff like the 3.5MB PNG banner image that's used as a thumbnail for a blog post. pretty easily fixed by resizing and making into a jpeg and it's easy to miss so i don't fault them too hard for that)

A real polycule would have billions of partners by this metric.

Also a good reminder to not recommend a site that's potentially harmful when browsed without an ad blocker.

@fugi Yeah. FWIW, pronouns.page is also open source, and me personally, I prefer the features of pronouns.page over pronouns.cc. Since pronouns.cc is generally non privacy invasive like this, I don't feel the need to self-host that one, I really am just looking for a time sink, I guess x). I think self-hosting this is a major undertaking, because of all the abuse+scraping prevention one would need etc., but I really would like to challenge myself :3

@star I mean against scraping, it probably would be best to just have non-guessable and non-indexed profile urls. Can't really do much against it otherwise anyway.

@fugi I more mean protections against fully automated scraping, such $alternative_to_anubis and iocaine, both of which very effective at keeping a good amount of traffic away before it ever reaches the servers and generates too much load there.

@star Well fully automated scraping would only come from profile URLs discovered elsewhere or potentially guessing. I think just IP banning after too many 404s or actual hits would be better suited than anubis, or not worth its downsides at least. (I don't know enough about iocaine to judge.)

I view such tools as better suited for things like forgejo, where there may be lots of expensive server side operations from link walking and also commonly an explore page and repo lists on user profiles.
Neither should be the case for something like pronouns.page (at least, if implemented as I'd find it sensible).

@fugi To be clear, I did say alternatives to Anubis precisely because I know that there are things achieving something similar with less of Anubis's downsides. On top of that, I also just don't like Anubis as a project
