People who disable all JavaScript on a website and then complain that it doesn't work: Why? Do you also complain about the website not displaying anything if you turn off your monitor?

Usually a website that requires JS is built with those modern frameworks compiling into huge obfuscated bundles introducing hundreds of abstraction layers for exactly no reason.

I'd understand if it was a complex messenger webapp. But it's a fcking text article / pricing table / etc.

SSR partially solves the problem: want to vibecode an "app" in JS? please run your malware on your server instead of my client.
("you" means a random webdev who likes js, not directed at Flori ofc)

In general, a JS engine is the most powerful technology implemented in a web browser. It allows to run arbitrary code and therefore exposes the user to so many possible attacks.

Tracking and browser fingerprinting is possible "thanks" to JS. And no, content blocking like uBo is not a solution since it's a blocklist, which means it will miss a quickly changed or randomly generated resource path.

Most of the time you only need HTML+CSS, JavaScript is for interactive elements (that doesn't fit the semantics/features of a hyperlink). I mean, modern CSS is featureful enough to replace the attempts to style things through JS.

Full disclosure: i actually have JS enabled in my main browser.
I tried turning JS off in mobile firefox and even used it that way for a couple of months, but it was a nightmare.

Perfect ragebait btw :3
And a perfect reminder for me to finally write down some pages on my website about things i hate (so i can reply with a link instead of repeating same arguments)

@star I mean, when I have the choice I'll do anything reasonably possible in order to make web things I build not hard depend on javascript. I also think that this should be an objective for more web developers, many many more than now (being realistic: anything that isn't driven by capitalism).

Complaining about things needlessly breaking without javascript enabled is a good thing in principle, IMO. But small indie projects with very limited resources (which I'm assuming this is about) are not the place for it.

Not hard depending on JS is a good objective for various reasons, but in the end it can be simply toggled back on and the problem for the user is gone. This can't be said about keyboard navigation, screen reader accessibility, etc. – things that people actually need and haven't chosen to, things that should be demanded of any project targeting the general public. And together with fixing bugs in general or implementing needed features, these are just much more important than supporting a niche use case that can be toggled on and off with a switch.

@star I think it is reasonable to complain if it is a non-interactive page that needs JS to be able to even read most of the article. Tables won't sort, fancy menus might not be there at all, and the overall formatting might be a little wonky, but unless it needs Anubis or similar to counteract scrapers for llm training, it should more or less work for reading the article/post/wiki/forum.
(to be clear, I don't complain, I don't use that site or open it in another browser that saves no cookies/cache or allow JS for that site if I frequently use it)

@star because JavaScript is overused, requires additional resources, exposes the browser to additional security and privacy risks, and is often used to implement dark patterns. a lot of websites are essentially just text with some links and images, which only requires HTML and maybe some CSS, so if they do not work without JavaScript, it shows that they are overengineered or perhaps even malicious. these complaints don’t apply to web applications, which are by their nature dynamic.

@star I removed all the MOV instructions from the Linux binary, and now all I'm getting is a kernel panic. Time to file another bug report cuz tyrant Linus refuses to acknowledge us MOV-skeptics.... Sigh
