@star i really hope this means something like servers on external servers, rather than something ridiculous like total fluxer and other polyproto-compatible cross-compatability. i see the idea but i'd rather have it be used to host a server elsewhere rather than talk to people who i might not want to have contact with, at all
this is already possible even on discord. federation doesn't change that.
on discord, generally everything is on one server so generally you can go all or nothing with friend requests and server access. my concern is if it is federated, it'll be like activitypub where people can interact from other servers, but it'll be out of the user's control. i.e bots harvest server invites or people's account names and mass add, and the user cannot block an entire server, only the account
at that point it is probably better to just have an entirely private account, which i probably would have done either way, but i think you can see the angle
@bell Do not fret, for we are considering things such as these already, and they aren't hard to solve at all :) with polyproto, I am aiming to make federation a really really good experience for the actual end-users; and not just us nerds who already have a lot of knowledge about stuff, but especially for the average discord user. Ideally, it's so good that you never even notice that something federated is going on. I know that it's possible, and I am trying really hard to make it happen
@star interesting wording, do you happen to be a contributor?
i wasn't entirely aware what it was, the post was a little hard to follow, but hopefully it will feel as natural as discord! i'm just concerned about the handling where it could easily be abused, and i like what activitypub does to handle this already
