ai i think the prevalence of ai and ai boosters (specifically in software development) have greatly reduced my motivation to do any computer stuff

ai so many software developers seemingly chose the profession for social status or for money or something, not because they actually like doing it.

most participating in foss also seem to be doing it out of habit or social status or something and not liberatory/progressive politics

a socialist critique of the authors' stance (not related to AI in its contents), RE: ai @aylamz You talk about "class consciousness" despite, seemingly, lacking it yourself. Your second post (paraphrased) criticizes "developers 'in it' for the money and status". You, essentially, scold workers for behaving like workers; under capitalism, workers sell their working power because they must, and partaking in it for monetary gain is not a character flaw. I mean, god forbid you do not spew passion in a system actively ignoring, sometimes exploiting that exact property. The janitor also chose the job for money. If "really enjoying it" is the bar by which legitimacy is reached, almost no worker passes, and the ones who do pass are the ones whose passion is being exploited.

I guess the point you are perhaps trying to make is in the direction of this profession, its perceived prestige and the pay that comes with it, attracts people who seek status; people, who identify with capital because they hope to "become" it. But the way you formulate it is essentially a splitting of the class into deserving passionate workers and the venal status-seeker, when, in reality, most workers are—secretly or openly—hoping, dreaming to escape their class, either through means of ascension ("becoming rich", "winning the lottery") or by collectively abandoning capitalism and the constraints of class.

But your framing of consciousness is sort of ironic. You seem to equate "class consciousness" with being angry or something, while being ignorant about cause and effect themselves. The rise of AI slop is driven a lot by a tired, overworked crowd of employed developers who are taking AI output as a means of having to do less work themselves. That is, by itself, a symptom of capitalism and its horrendous effects on the sentient spirit, not "lacking consciousness".

a socialist critique of the authors' stance (not related to AI in its contents), RE: ai @aylamz block me for this if you want. but: fuck genai, fuck capitalism, fuck the system which is not broken, but working as intended, and merely is breaking us and our spirits in doing so. for what its worth, i also strongly empathize with you. it's fucking bleak out there.
