Why is NixOS so broken on Desktop? I really gotta switch to a stable system. Maybe it's time to also put Nura on my Desktop.

@ExiledKing Stable. Now after above toot I switched to unstable and my specific bug (xdg-desktop-portal-kde not working) was fixed. Wondering how long until I hit the next issue

@knievelcat You can also pull the patch you need usually if you don't want to switch off a release branch. I prefer NixOS because it at least leaves the papertrail in the config of what fixes I needed over time. I used Arch previously for a few years - each new build was effectively starting from scratch. It is fun to dig in to troubleshoot. What was your original issue?

rant, nixos, nothing personal @ExiledKing I've been using NixOS for 2 years now at least. I'm at a point where I want a Linux distro that just works which I won't have to fix every 3 weeks because something broke. NixOS is amazing on servers and I will continue to use it on mine but on desktop it is just too much.

When I had this problem on unstable a few months ago I switched to stable thinking it would help. It did help a little bit but in the end stuff still breaks left and right.

Other things that annoy me about NixOS:
- System updates take ages because one small change in a dependency of a package will cause the whole dependency tree to be re-downloaded (don't quote me on this but otherwise I can't explain why an update on stable 3 days after the last update downloads 1000+ packages)
- If there's something broken you need to remember to look in the distro-specific paths like /run/current-system/sw/ and ask yourself, hmm
realpath $(which examplebin) am I running again.
- Also software development is fucking annoying on nix since I fork a lot of projects and do not want to setup a flake.nix for every single one and if I do I gotta keep it in the fucking git repository but need to make sure to not commit (because it's another person's project and I don't want to force nix on them) it while at the same time being unable to .gitignore it since then the flake won't work anymore.
- Because of the above annoyance I now have a huge fat flake.nix in my ~/bin folder which I use for other people's projects. In that flake there's every dependency any of those projects need. This leads to weird issues like my systems helix editor not starting because the libc in the flake is different from the system one, great!

All of these issues just pile up and while I love configuring my system with nix and having my preferences in a declarative language, if the end result is a pain to use because of the issues I mentioned before I'm just going to stop.

rant, nixos, nothing personal @knievelcat None taken. I prefer people use Linux - plain and simple. Distro doesn't matter.

Thanks for the rant. Yeah, I definitely feel you on some of those points. I migrated my whole house to Nixos, so I got servers, simple desktops, and not so simple. Each one had some interesting quirk crop up.

Hope you find something that works better for your setup if you do switch.
