The Phanpy-adjacent Mastodon experience is viable on this machine, but a bit rough, and none of the existing CLI options totally fit what I'm looking for out of the box. For example, mastui is so dependent on emoji that it just breaks in my terminal, and I couldn't really copy and paste the auth link.

What does have some promise, at least, is
madonctl. It would be a truly off-the-deep end choice for me to stop all the other stuff I'm doing and spend months making a Mastodon CLI client from scratch. But building a tiny UI over this data layer? Starting from my own personal most immediate needs? Still not something I want to drop everything and do right now, but now we're not talking quite so crazy.

@MaddieM4 Hey, maybe it can be a tmux script.

@mei heh, that could be a fun approach to do it! But I think I still need to figure out stuff like turning JSON into appropriate plain text.

Alternatively, it could be a small portable Python server, but without whatever glitch was breaking Mastui in that mode. Then I'm still able to leverage browser rendering, but in a very light UI with little to no JS.

@MaddieM4 I will now stop nerdsniping you x3 a bit surprised nothing fits the bill, maybe akkoma-fe? i don't know if they've detached that from the backend like GTS did for mastodon next.masto-fe.superseriousbusiness.org

@mei Well to be fair, it's entirely possible the problem I'm having has more to do with search being enshittified past a threshold of basic usability, and there's a good thing out there that didn't even come up. Akkoma-FE didn't! Although it kinda sounds like that talks to Akkoma over its own set of REST APIs and then the Mastodon compat is in federation. Hard to say without doing a deeeeep dive.
