in Oisterwijk (NL), there was an intense gas smell throughout large parts of the city, and the fire department came out to try and find the gas leak, but they couldn't find anything

then someone back at the fire department noticed that one of their training materials was missing.

specifically: the little jar of smell compound that's added to natural gas to make it have that intense smell, which they normally use for training detection of the smell.

turns out someone thought it was empty, threw it in the trash that was then collected, and the garbage truck then distributed that smell through the city on its route!
