@star @matildalove in europe it probably is a meh thing to say, but in the us working conditions are oftentimes much worse, it's not that far fetched considering people get barely enough for food, rent and fuel for the car (good luck not owning a car in the us)

in other places it's even worse, it's straight up slave labor

@hazel @matildalove It feels weird to me to call anything but slavery "slavery", for the same reason that it feels weird to me to call anything but the holocaust "the holocaust". I am scared that it could water down from the fact that these historic events were uniquely unspeakable horrors, by intermingling different things with them. And as a white person I am personally just extremely careful about the term "slavery" in particular. In my daily life, the slave trade and its after effects barely influence me personally. It feels wrong to me to then use this word and associate it with things that are also very bad, but not this, because I don't feel I would have the right to do so.

politics @star @hazel@starlightnet.work @matildalove my problem with that analogy is that the holocaust was a specific historical event, slavery is a practice that was and is common around the world. there was only one holocaust, but slavery was everywhere, all the time.

identifying wage labor as a form of slavery has a long history in and outside the US, predating US chattel slavery.

not really related but, uh, the association of slavery with people of color sounds like, kind of racist? black people are only one recent example of the many groups to have been targeted for slavery and focusing on that exclusively makes my brain go ​:neocat_woozy:​

politics to keep this disconnected from myself here: i am white, german-passing, financially stable, housed and educated. i am nonbinary, visibly gender non-conforming, and young. together, these factors make me relatively unaffected by slavery of any kind, and i am not speaking from experience.

politics @cn I guess this also shows just how ignorant I am about this topic and that I have lots to still learn about it. Ultimately being confronted with this is worth much more than continuing living in ignorance, even though it may feel bad for a moment

politics @star @matildalove thanks for bringing it up! you're obviously also right that chattel slavery in the US and wage labor today in the US or in clothing manufacturing in bangladesh are totally different in terms of magnitude and shouldn't be compared.
