this might be a bit controversial but if you're worried about an instance that just boosts hashtagged posts it sees you probably shouldn't be posting to public

like what do you mean today's fedi controversy is that there is an instance out there that boosts hashtagged posts and they dared make it opt-out

girl are you listening to yourself. the post is already being indexed by hashtags anyways. the bot just..boosts them to get a more comprehensive view across servers

it doesn't bridge anything, it doesn't store your posts, it just sends out boost activities from things it gets
from already existing relays

I am getting the feeling y'all like the idea of decentralized social media but also...don't like some of the core ideas of the tech we use to build it. people can't boost your post without consent now????

your posts are out there on relays like relay.fedi.buzz and you never batted an eye despite it doing a very similar thing with hashtags, why do you suddenly care here

mind you, the software that tags.pub runs needs improvement as it seems currently it does not support any kind of blocklist which would be needed to keep the boosted content clean of things like CSAM, but the core concept of the software isn't somehow anti-consent or something.

again, you're posting to public. to a public audience.

@alexia How would you like it if someone followed you around on the street with a microphone pointed at your face and connected to a loudspeaker?

@felix you completely missed the point

you're posting to public on a network made up of people boosting eachother's posts. the entire point of this place is to boost things yet when a relay does it it's suddenly bad

besides, note how the proposed solution to the problem I gave was not posting to public, which immediately resolves the issue as hashtags are not indexed outside of public.

@felix fedi does not represent a public street, it represents a stage. we're all shouting into the void hoping that someone will hear us

@felix federation is already an implicit action, unless you personally host a allowlist federation instance you're already implicitly allowing other people to have your posts without consent, boost them without consent, and index hashtags found within them without consent

@alexia Yes, again, other people. Even strangers if they're respectful. Heck, even bots if they have a theme. Not weirdos following me around and staring just because it's technically possible.

@felix when I say "other people" I mean them and their instance software, fwiw. you're still trusting the software in the end

@alexia No, I trust the people involved to follow basic social norms. Like, you know, consent.

@felix @alexia Consent? If you are choosing to post publicly and with federation enabled, and also choose to federate with that specific instance, on a public social media platform, and it is still shocking to you that this can happen, then I would suggest changing literally any of these facts
