labor stuff sometimes I get this feeling that software engineering might not have that much future anymore, or at least not as appealing, and that maybe I should look for something new

but it's also true that it does give
a lot of flexibility, which is my main interest nowadays. besides, work is work, I should not try to glorify it, it'll never be what makes me happy

labor stuff @kitten What's more flexible than having two careers to choose from? :3 You can do one thing for 5 years, then another for a while, then pivot back if you feel like it :3

labor stuff @star oh, I meant flexibility like: in my current job I essentially take vacation whenever I feel like and can work from wherever if needed. that'd be completely not possible as a train driver. I'd have more vacation days, but less agency on when I'd take them.

labor stuff @kitten Ah! Right. But! Vacation days aren't everything! Doing something you have fun doing, something that fulfills you; to me, that ranks higher. I think it is not a bad idea at all to look into pivoting careers if you aren't happy with what you are currently doing neobot_melt_happy Maybe, if you feel up for it, you could already start learning some of the stuff they teach one at train driver school™️ on the side, assuming you haven't done that already heh neocat_nom_blob But yes, I am supporting this notion!!

labor stuff @star meow blobcathearts thanks for all the support

I guess it'll eventually happen. I won't rush it yet, though, I can just start looking into it as you say

labor stuff @kitten Yes, rushing stuff like this is a bad idea. Take the steps at a pace that feels cozy for you, if you are going to take them at all. c: neocat_hug

labor stuff @star @kitten i second what flori says
also, there is not only commercial train driving in the railway
sure there are the infra stuff (switches etc) but there is also all the shunting, with sncf that’s a different job from driver, although it’s almost the same (you drive trains but on a small network and you’re not allowed take regular passengers)

i’m personally genuinely considering becoming a train driver (the shunting one) but can’t make my mind
although, i’m in the hiring process and already got one interview (and should get the second one, one day)
