i'm curious what content scanning that mastodon is working on will look like. on one hand it makes sense, server admins can be held liable for whatever they're hosting, and anyone who has any expectation of privacy on this network is severely mistaken. on the other hand, given the culture here, i can't imagine that going well?

any automated content scanning has to be ai-based, which everyone hates. they say there's going to be an option to self-host—presumably you'd need a nice gpu for that? and there's also a fediverse auxiliary service provider for those that don't want to self-host.

and like, i'd honestly be uncomfortable with the photos i might post followers-only being uploaded to a third-party service like that? i know it's irrational, they're already on like 50 different hetzners, 20 wasabis and 5 s3's. but still, those are just storage, they don't like, feed them into ai...

@ww very high chance your photos already go into photodna given that this is automatic when you use cloudflare

@aura photodna is just a perceptual hash tho, i don't care so much about that

but there's no way mastodon is getting their hands on that database, nor would it like, fully cover their use case, so it has to be ai, right?

@ww AI is a fuzzy term and whoever outright rejects a piece of technology because it fits a label that badly defined without a more substantial critique is literally just looking for reasons to be upset and I don't give a single shit about their opinion.

Also PhotoDNA is not
just perceptual hashing. And you're right, they will not give anyone the dataset. I tried that when I had this problem in 2014 and they wouldn't even give me API access without a suite a lawyers back then.

@aura i'd say so, but idk what the fedi consensus is. personally i'm fine with that use of it though, i really appreciate the object recognition apple put in their photos app.

there's two separate points i was trying to make i guess
- personally i don't like the idea of my pictures fed into a probabilistic algorithm with an inevitably high rate of false positives and unclear consequences of that (most likely some human moderator somewhere that isn't one of my followers having to manually review them?)
- this network is pretty biased against anything that can remotely be labeled as ai, as well as automated content scanning like apple wanted to add, and third party integrations, so it's gonna be interesting to see the reaction

i am completely fucking done caring about the opinions of fedi on this broadly.

i used to have a bad habit of pushing back to ideologically driven shitty groupthink takes from left-leaning people that i didn't even disagree with on the conclusion. but i kinda learned the hard way that's a really fun way to make yourself unpopular and miserable. so i just don't give a shit anymore beyond occasionally laughing at how terrible some fedi takes are.

if you wanna hate AI for the reasons that don't make sense (when perfectly good reasons exist too), you can do that. if you wanna have zero nuance and wear your opposition like a badge of honor, do that.

i will sigh and move on.

@ww also if anyone reads this and thinks they can extrapolate my stance on AI from this as "positive": fuck you block me.
