Right now, contributing to our software is particularly difficult, as we exclusively self-host our code on our own Forgejo, to which we don't give out accounts.

We want to ask, would anyone object to mirroring to tangled.org (on our own infra, i.e PDS + tangled-knotserver) to allow contributions that way?

@the tbh I would recommend doing what git.sleeping.town does, where they allow you to sign in using
a github account
a codeberg account
a gitlab account
a discord account
a handful of accounts from fedi servers (transmom.love, chitter.xyz, tech.lgbt, wetdry.world, and meow.social)

in addition to a sleeping.town account

you could also possibly offer tangled, but I would look at doing this first

you see, we intend our hosted services to eventually be member benefits once we have an e.V registered in Germany, not for them to be open-signup which is a massive potential moderation burden

it's just contributing via tangled does add a significant hurdle
as an example, if I wanted to contribute, I would now need to go and figure out how tangled works, etc.
the other alternative would be to have a mirror on codeberg and accept PRs from codeberg or your self-hosted forgejo (or tangled)

@solonovamax @the well another reason we don't just mirror to 20 places is because we appreciate decentralization

Tangled is a git forge that uses ATProto as the backbone for identity, meaning there's already an existing identity system that can be used, for existing people to login and contribute with

But at the same time we can own the repos on our infrastructure still (knot.starlightnet.work ), which we cannot do quite as much if we just mirror to different places

@the @solonovamax we want something where it's not just "we are decentralized because we are on 5 different websites" but we want to have a central thing that we can point to, that then is powered by some neat decentralized tech that lets everyone retain their data

like ActivityPub, or ATProto

this lets us keep our data, while letting other people in, and without having to keep other people's personal data

@solonovamax @alexia @the well currently i have drama to slay before I can get back to things, but regardless, polyproto development has been more active in the last couple weeks, thanks to pawsome contributors neocat_floof_cute espeon_love :) an implementation of oidc and scim is being made in the WIP home server, and a PURR is being drafted alongside that neocat__w_
