also kind of nitpicking but wtf is this "/nix/store/{unrecognizeable million characters keysmash of a hash}-program-name" convention? how hard would it be to do automated symlinking to /usr/bin so it's all accessible and makes sense? it makes ps/top so fucking unusable i don't get it

also i imagine it to be a killer for screenreader users

what a system huh. also i broke it by switching gnome to cosmic, the login screen (greeter) doesn't work. if i do a new installation and just get cosmic (same version) right away then everything is okay. so much for "reproducibility" neobot_woozy

why is it popular again? i thought it's supposed to be good and scritch that perfectionism itch by having good declarative tools and not having to worry about broken states since "immutability" or whatever

@byte Lots of things are confusing and weird about NixOS, but this one is maybe(?) explainable by state that is not declaratively managed by your config

@star that vm has zero manual configs, it's just main /etc/nixos/configuration, no flakes, no greeter config edits, no home manager and dotfiles. everything is kept default. mint can change gdm to kdm to lightdm in a span of 5 minutes and it will work, idk what's the unique problem for nix not to die on such a simple task
