PSA, elitism (especially in tech-/chaos spaces) a reminder that elitism is to be outlawed in any and all social circles and -interactions

its completely ok to not have a fancy nixos setup with niri, and to use something stock that works for you instead
its completely ok to use vscode instead of helix or nvim or whatever, and vice versa!
its completely ok if you do not have the spoons, energy or frankly if you just do not want to switch off of windows/linux/$distro because it feels comfy to you

do what sparks joy for you. "cringe" is not real. you are pawsome.

Too many people are like "Why are you even bothering to run windows?"

And it is like...because there are no equivalents fit for purpose to, say, Fusion 360. Like, Freecad will probably be usable for the stuff I do in a decade or so, based on the development cycles of other big projects like Blender or GIMP.

PSA, elitism (especially in tech-/chaos spaces) @star I unfortunately made a similar experience at when we talked about alt text for pictures and I mentioned that it is expecially hard on instagram, which we use for a local trans community space. I was personally attaced for using instagram in the first place, the person didn't want to understand that most in our community aren't using fedi and we don't want to cut them off our information. So I resonate with this statement vey much

PSA, elitism (especially in tech-/chaos spaces) @vanishka @star oof mouse is so sorry to hear that. it mirrors a general attitude in a lot of less diverse nerd culture circles this one has observed ... there's often a caustic mixture of "you're using the wrong thing which is not my thing", "ugh isn't it obvious?" and "the thing that I consider the right thing is the wrong thing for you". a triangle one can not win in. elitist gatekeeping while shaming

Pointing to a better place for an individual is not a problem as long as it's done politely, and done in the interest of the person being pointed.

Putting people down and trying to advance personal agendas is always harmful.

i just use linux because windows is software made out of pure evil and never works when i need it lol

PSA, elitism (especially in tech-/chaos spaces) @star my experience around niri has been actually pretty great as far as not seeing elitism goes, it's one of those compositors that has really nice default configuration and even got decent screen reader support that works OOTB recently

that said I totally agree with the post's main message

And its color feels bleh
But yeah other than that I agree that its defaults are actually pretty good, and my main pain takes are the looks of it, which are subjective so like whatever

PSA, elitism (especially in tech-/chaos spaces) @star I work with a custom fork of the Linux kernel on a daily basis in wildly alien environments that I create diagnosing tools for myself.

at the end of the day I just want something that works.

Also worth mentioning: Linus Torvalds uses Fedora.

That said, it's totally cool and fun to mess around with Linux and customize the snot out of it, and even show it off, just don't pretend it inherently makes you a worse person if you don't do this lol
