spotifyIt would be nice if literally anyone making a post about how you should stop using Spotify would mention actual alternatives or advice on how to move to an alternative as easily as possible.
I get it, I get the reasons for why one should move away from it. In fact, about 99.9% of my listening now happens through my self-hosted collection of music. But barely anyone has the spoons to research and do everything themselves. Don't just hand out advice, hand out empowerment!
re: spotify@star It's called piracy, everyone did it until spotify somehow convinced the whole world to pay $12 a month for the privilege of not owning any music.
And if you really like an artist, buy an album or piece of merch. You'll support an artist more by purchasing one piece of merchandise or an album more than you'd ever give them by listening to their music on spotify.
@coolboymew@star I’d love to buy more genres of music but like electronic music is littered with EPs and it’s too prohibitive to buy them all to listen to. Really only makes sense to be buying albums for mainstream stuff.

Either way, music artists fucking hate streaming services. IMHO, streaming services are a raw deal for everyone except the service itself: The listener gets worse quality and has their music held hostage behind a sub and the artist gets shafted on their income.
Granted, for major artists, I'm fairly certain most of their money comes from record deals. So like, fuck 'em. It's indies that this model is really fucking over.

Not sure how me ceasing use of Spotify is going to change anything in terms of "ethical consumption (meme)" if I'm going to instead be giving an additional 17.99€/month to YouTube, which heavily cuts into a budget that I could spend on CDs instead. I have no intention of giving YouTube a single cent and for very good reason and many of the non-english-speaking artists I've been listening to (some for many years) only have their stuff on YouTube, Spotify and some on niconico I guess.
The argument is very short sighted and further responses seemingly always in bad faith, it's a bit ridiculous honestly. Also some hobby artists do not accept money and it's rude in their countries' cultures to insist on giving them money anyways (i.e. tipping/donations), so doing that to "make up" for piracy is not a valid strategy in many cases either. I've personally gone back and fourth on tipping myself too, but after failing to make a stable income happen for years, I'm very glad to have two friends who pay for my domain+hosting+email package.
re: spotify@mitsunee@star if someone doesn't want money then they don't want money, i don't see the problem with just not paying someone if they don't accept it. piracy is functionally identical to just not listening to their music, in any case. (i did have someone DM me on soulseek like "oh hey, you're sharing my music, that's really cool, thanks!" which was nice)
spotify@star or, you know, provide me with a tool that doesn't crash while attempting to download my playlist and then fails to index the already downloaded songs? Because spotdl can't do that, as I've had to learn.
So now my only option for moving my Spotify library to a local one is to write an entire downloader myself
