seriously, out of all the issues you could be focussing on, why free software???
it's not gonna change shit about your daily life if all software suddenly turned open source and "free".
Go be annoying about some more relevant stuff instead. Go read some Marx, Luxembourg, or Lenin instead of fucking Stallman

@star could you elaborate on the big changes it would bring? im talking actual systemic change.
Do you think labour would no longer be exploited by those with the means of production?
Do you think capital in general would suddenly lose its power over one sector falling away?

Also, do you seriously believe that advocating for open source software is a better way to bring about change than to advocate for socialism?

@ixhby You establish false equivalence by acting as if we can only have one of these things. People should be able to contribute to the fight against tyranny in ways they are good at. Do I think that, if all software were to become open source overnight, the world would be a slightly better place? Yes, I do.

Also, do not forget that there is a lot of the same moral foundation involved when fighting for a just, socialist world and fighting for free, open source software. OSS is how millions of people who are being oppressed, surveilled and silenced are able to speak up. Think TOR, Tails, Signal; things that are at the core of how some journalists are able to even operate in the first place. Free software is free information.

@star Actually yea you know what you're right. My post aimed at the wrong issue. Contributing to free software is a great and correct thing to do.

But i do think that arguing for free software as a sole focus, without seeing the wider system that both causes proprietary software to exist and turns it against the user, is both misguided and not productive.
A focus on eliminating the material conditions that cause proprietary software to both exist and suck would bring about a dominance of free software in a much broader way than a focus on free software within capitalism ever could.
Yes, free software definitely brings about good even within capitalism. But much like social reform, it changes little to nothing about the material conditions that cause the issues we're fighting against in the first place.
Proprietary software will not stop existing and being used if we just all code hard enough and annoy as many windows users as possible.
Making and advocating for free software is a good fight. But without systemic change we will never win.
