Balena Etcher has to be one of the most bloated alternatives to 'dd' that I've ever seen.

If you’re on Windows, Rufus supports dd mode for those special images that don’t work any other way. It’s also only ~2MB and doesn’t require installation (if you pick the portable version).

I’m not sure of a user friendly alternative on Linux or Mac, but there’s
gotta be something better than fucking Etcher.

I've also had a good experience dumping random ISOs on a large Ventoy-formatted drive, but it seems some on Fedi have issues with Ventoy for... reasons?

@maddy It used to be, and maybe still is the case, that the ventoy sources contain a bunch of unexplained binary blobs, where it's apparently not clear what they do. This was what I knew about it

@star @maddy Yes, and the topic aurfaced not so long after the xz-utils scenario, so it infosec people were very sensitive about this

@sly_vi @star Ahhh right, that sounds familiar. I'm hoping the dev(s) have been more transparent about the blob since. (I should probably look into that)

@sly_vi @star Oh neat, it does look like there's been some movement regarding that issue! (just started reading the thread)

@sly_vi @star @maddy Oh my bristling at using Ventoy (and to be clear, I loved it, I still have one laying around) was more that when these concerns were raised, the backlash was extremely dodgy, over-the-top, almost astroturf in appearance.

Like there was a coordinated effort to go "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".

Go look at Veronica Explains' mentions any time she's like "hey, I don't like Ventoy, I don't want to talk about it, if you like it that's great" - it's ravenous.
