talking about editors and idesCodium (VS Code) settings really suck.
- The user settings and the list of plugins you have and have enabled are separate - The editor offers no variables I know of to locate things like a specific XDG dir, and I am not sure that shell expansion is supported - There is only one setup: I cannot have differences between devices and workspace settings are in a different place yet again, which is inside the project you are working on. That is just stupid for so many reasons
Please tell me that there is an amazing fix for this, like Nix or a plugin which makes this better.
Else, I am yearning for ox and perhaps other, non-modal terminal-based editors to get better. No, I will not spend 2000h of my life learning and perfecting vim/emacs/helix; I think those are all really cool, but I have things to do and I am rarely limited by the speed of me being able to perform an action anyway.
re: talking about editors and ides@star i see... Well for me, i kinda rediscovered sublime text, its very lightweight on its own and doesn't get in the way. And now we even have all kinds of language servers like ruff :D
Playing around with zed too but it has its quirks...
re: talking about editors and ides@stellavie Does Zed still have that license claude where they force you into data collection for all eternity and are like legally allowed to do whatever with your data and stuff? (Google it if you weren't aware, it's... spooky)
re: talking about editors and ides@star huh really? ... Skimmed the tos and it looks like the collection is mostly opt-in. They had a blog post in 2023 about it and i suppose its better now
talking about editors and ides@star i'm not trying to persuade you in any way, but i just wanted to say that when switching full time to (neo)vim many years ago, i don't remember having to go through the adjustment period everyone keeps bringing up, i literally just started using it and going on as usual
and having to spend countless hours to configure your editor is just a meme (turned myth, because people seem to actually believe this), it literally just takes a couple of hours to get a custom config up and running, assuming you're doing everything from scratch, maybe even less if someone who knows the ecosystem can show you around and provide some guidance
after that, you can avoid touching your config for a very long time, even years, if you prefer not to
as for non-modal editors, kate is a fine choice, sublime works pretty well if you don't mind it not being open-source, and zed keeps getting better
