I have configured the Scarlett 4i4 for the last time. There will be no problems. Next time I switch to macOS it will not reset my beautiful work immediately because the vendor drivers are worse. It will always just work.

@ireneista @joepie91 As someone who first ported postmarketOS (pure-Linux) to a unsupported device when she was ~14 neocat_smug, I can definitely agree that porting Android is a much harder task. You need like ~150GB free diskspace and a loott of compilation time. Then many things will probably not work, even without ever replacing the vendor kernel - something that can usually be skipped.

If you have these resources and time to play with Google's build systems you can probably make it work. But it's a massive investment for 1 device every few years..

postmarketOS is actually pretty straightforward! As long as you aren't exploiting the bootloader, anyway. Most modern phones have been good about that IME. But this is far from a fully-featured phone for most devices, in terms of stuff like "all cameras work" or "I can actually do a phonecall". Even if we overcome that, banking apps and similar will necessitate an untampered device – something that is getting harder to spoof as the last devices not supporting hardware attestation are reaching EoL.


Having two devices for this purpose is most certainly a luxury. Building Android like a vendor would is time-consuming and requires wider skills due to needing to have a deeper understanding of the underlying technologies and patterns as you are sandwiched between two rolling targets: the vendor and Android.

Relative to that, postmarketOS is straightforward to get started with.

like i'm just starting to realize how this whole "i made a really cool thing on the computer" => "i need to show it to everyone" => "woah it's not so cool anymore, i need to do more" cycle was perpetuated for so long.
i genuinely had a lot of fun and i still find this thing really cool, but it's because i'm not helpless to this cycle that i get to keep some of that joy for myself

@0x47df so I have actually done this! with a raspberry pi at my grandma's and only one push button.

it worked, and she thanked me a bunch but didn't actually want to use it. the usecase was a bit different in our case, but consider whether making it easier will actually create interest in fixing the problem or not.

it might be better to focus on minimizing document counts.

i think until you see yourselves cofronting and enable that you can't really know if you're plural or not. i don't see it as soley a thing we are but somewhere a bit murkier: if i think through a plural lens i become more plural for a time.

we never had strong memory barriers as much as "trust me bro you dont wanna know whats behind this door". and going beyond that was about trusting ourselves to be gentle and kind with the roughened-up parts too neocat_hug_heart
